How Zakat is calculated
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on the wealth a Muslim has held for one full lunar (Hijri) year. It becomes due only when your net zakatable wealth reaches the nisab — the minimum threshold, equal to the value of 612.36g of silver or 87.48g of gold. This calculator uses the silver nisab, the lower and more widely recommended threshold, priced from the live silver market.
To find your Zakat, add up your cash and savings, the market value of your gold and silver, your investments and shares, and money owed to you that you expect back. Subtract debts you owe now. If the remaining amount is at or above the nisab, your Zakat is 2.5% of it.
Zakat questions, answered
How is Zakat calculated?
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth — cash, gold, silver, investments and money owed to you, minus debts due now — provided the total is at or above the nisab and has been held for one lunar (Hijri) year.
What is the nisab?
The nisab is the minimum wealth you must hold before Zakat is due. It equals the value of 612.36g of silver or 87.48g of gold. Most calculators use the silver nisab because it is lower and benefits more recipients. This page updates the silver nisab from the live spot price.
What assets are included?
Cash and savings, the market value of gold and silver, investments and shares, business stock, and money others owe you that you expect to recover. You subtract debts that are due now.
When is Zakat due?
Zakat becomes due once your zakatable wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar year (your Zakat anniversary).
